Republic of Ireland 1 Austria 1: Walters’ late strike salvages vital point

Jonathan Walters 85th-minute strike rescued a potentially crucial point for the Republic of Ireland in World Cup Qualifying Group D following a 1-1 draw with Austria in Dublin.

With leaders Serbia facing Wales in a later kick-off on Sunday, Martin O Neill s side needed just a point to temporarily at least move top of what is proving to be a tightly contested group.

And, despite a flat first-half performance, a late glut of pressure from the hosts resulted in Walters thumping home a deserved equaliser to cancel out Martin Hinteregger s opener.

Shane Duffy thought he had snatched a winner two minutes later, only for the referee to disallow the header for a foul by the defender, who led with a raised arm.

Ireland had stepped up the pressure in a frantic se…

´I´m capable of getting out of this´ – Gerrard remains up for the fight at Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard remains adamant he is the right man to lead Aston Villa out of their poor run of form, declaring: I m capable of getting out of this .

With Villa languishing near the Premier League s relegation zone after winning just two of their first 10 games of the season, Gerrard s position as manager has been called into question.

Ahead of their trip to Fulham on Thursday, Villa have won just one of their last eight league matches (D3 L4), only scoring five goals during that run.

Earlier this week, reports suggested Villa may make an audacious move for former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino if they opt to dispense with Gerrard s services, but the former Liverpool midfielder is determined to fight on.

I m here to fight an…

Cesar ready to repay the faith

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar says he is ready to repay the faith shown in him by Luiz Felipe Scolari at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Scolari has been criticised in some parts for including Cesar in Brazil s squad for the showpiece event, with the veteran shot-stopper plying his trade in MLS for Toronto FC.

But the 34-year-old, who is in competition with Botafogo s Jefferson and Atletico Mineiro s Victor to be number one, is determined to prove the doubters wrong as Brazil aim to advance past Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon in Group A on home soil.

When criticism comes along, you have to accept it, said the 78-cap stalwart, who made his debut for Brazil in the 2004 Copa America. It s just like an orange, you have to peel away the good parts and separate the bad parts.

Real snatch Ajax starlet; Jonas agrees Benfica move

Real snatch Ajax starlet

Real Madrid have signed Dutch midfielder Mink Peeters from Ajax Amsterdam, the player has revealed via his Twitter account.

The 16-year-old has confirmed that he is now officially a Real Madrid player, even if FIFA have yet to sanction the deal.

Should the transfer go through, Peeters will become the third youngster to leave Ajax for a top European club in a short period of time, with Javairo Dilrosun and Timothy Fosu-Mensah joining Manchester United and Manchester City respectively.

The interesting thing is that Ajax only signed the midfielder two years back from arch rivals PSV Eindhoven and they have now been given the taste of their own medicine.

Mink Peeters, who act as an attacking midfielder, has yet to be handed h…

Bacca wants Sevilla return – agent

Carlos Bacca wants to return to Sevilla, according to the AC Milan forward s agent.

The Colombia international is expected to leave San Siro this transfer window, having been left out of a friendly win over Bayern Munich and both legs of their Europa League tie with CSU Craiova.

Bacca left Sevilla for Milan in 2015 and has scored 31 Serie A goals.

He won the Europa League twice at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and Bacca s representative Sergio Barila told AS: It is now well known that Carlos wants to return to Sevilla.

He had a splendid personal and sporting experience in that city, which is why he wants to return. This is an important year for players, that of the World Cup, so he needs to play in order to take part.

He is in good shape physically …

Juventus could go after Pogba to make a statement

Here we go again! Another summer transfer window is coming up next and another year that could mean new talk about the departure of Paul Pogba from Manchester United.

Whilst in the summer of 2019 the main talk was about the French star going to Real Madrid from his current club, this time it is Juventus who is being mentioned again. The Serie A champions could be the ones going after their former player

It is Calciomercato who are reporting that Juventus want to make another statement signing this summer, like they did in the last two years. In the summer of 2018 it was Cristiano Ronaldo who came from Real Madrid in a club record deal and last year it was Matthijs de Ligt who came from Ajax. The report suggests Pogba could be the number one target for Juventus, to impro…

Olympiacos seal Afellay loan

Ibrahim Afellay will spend the final year of his Barcelona contract on loan at Olympiacos after agreeing a season-long move on Sunday.

The Netherlands international arrived at the Camp Nou from PSV in December 2010 but failed to make the impact many had expected at the Catalan giants.

He will hope a switch to the Greek champions, who have the option of extending his stay for a further two years, can help him find the form that first attracted Barcelona.

Two lengthy injury lay-offs hindered Afellay during his time in Spain and he made only 35 appearances for Barca either side of a loan spell at Schalke.

Afellay made his international bow in 2007 and was part of the Netherlands European Championship squad in 2012.

However, he has not added to his 44…

Debt-riddled Twente cop three-point penalty

The Dutch Football Association deducted three points from Twente s Eredivisie tally on Wednesday due to financial trouble.

Twente lost three points in the Eredivisie on Wednesday, after being penalised by the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) for failing to reduce their debts.

The KNVB s license commission released a statement declaring Twente for the second time failed to follow its own debt payment plan.

Twente, who are rated in category one on the KNVB s financial trouble scale, had submitted a schedule to rise into either category two or three within three years, as they work to reduce debts incurred after renovating their home stadium De Grolsch Veste in 2011.

The Enschede-based club have no plans to appeal the decision, which will see Twente drop fr…
